Buena Vista Orchestra brings the Havana songbook to Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg on October 26, 2026. Rooted in the Buena Vista Social Club project launched in mid-90s Havana by Juan de Marcos González with Ry Cooder, the ensemble carries a repertoire shaped by veteran Cuban singers and players. The set leans into son cubano, bolero, guajira and danzón, played in an acoustic format where voices, guitars, tres, piano and traditional percussion set the pulse.
From the 1997 studio sessions that gathered Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo to the concert at Carnegie Hall and the Wim Wenders film, this music has traveled widely. On stage today, the orchestra picks up that thread with close vocal harmonies, interlocking string lines, piano montunos and hand percussion driving the dance feel. It’s a live reading of classic Cuban forms, carried by musicians who keep this repertoire active and present.
