Johnny Dowd

Johnny Dowd will perform on March 5, 2026 at Metropool in Hengelo. Since the late 1990s the Ithaca (NY)-based Texan has been writing songs at the intersection of Americana, indie rock and narrative folk. His late debut Wrong Side of Memphis (1998), followed by Pictures from Life’s Other Side (1999) and Temporary Shelter (2000), set the tone: fragmented narratives, fringe characters and a dry, dark humour.

His voice straddles the line between speech and song; the lyrics evoke everyday American scenes, family, religion and the small frictions of daily life. The guitars remain raw, the rhythms tight and spare, sometimes edged with electronics. Live he alternates between a compact lineup and a more electric setup with musicians from his Ithaca circle, giving the songs different angles while keeping the story at the centre.

Born in Fort Worth and passing through Memphis and Oklahoma before settling in New York State, Dowd has been touring Europe for years. In Hengelo he will bring together new and older material in that familiar mix: spare grooves, wandering characters and lyrics that get under the skin. On March 5 at Metropool it’s all about that distinctive storytelling rhythm and a sound that colours just outside the lines.
