Thundercat

On 15 March 2026 Thundercat will perform at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. The bassist and singer Stephen Bruner, from Los Angeles, has built his own universe on the edges of jazz, funk, soul, R&B and electronica. With his six-string, melodic basslines and light falsetto, he glides effortlessly between jazz fusion and warm, grooving rhythms. After years as a session musician — including with Suicidal Tendencies — he became part of the Brainfeeder scene around Flying Lotus. Albums such as The Golden Age of Apocalypse and Apocalypse set the course; Drunk and It Is What It Is deepen the interplay between groove, refined harmonies and a psychedelic sheen.

Live, the focus is on the bass up front, flexible arrangements and a balancing act between introspective lyrics and winks to pop culture. The set intertwines his solo material with traces of his work in the hip-hop and jazz worlds, where he frequently appears alongside artists like Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington and Erykah Badu. An evening where virtuosic lines and a strong sense of song meet — compact and playful at once.
