Johnny Dowd

On 20 March 2026 Johnny Dowd will perform at A-Theater in Groningen. Born in Fort Worth, Texas (1948) and long based in Ithaca, New York, he has been developing his own musical language since the late 1990s at the intersection of Americana, indie rock and narrative folk. His belated arrival on record with Wrong Side of Memphis (1998), followed by Pictures from Life’s Other Side (1999) and Temporary Shelter (2000), set the tone: fragmentary stories, marginal characters and dry, dark humour.

Live, Dowd works with a compact lineup drawn from the Ithaca scene. His voice slides between speaking and singing, and the lyrics pass through family, religion, daily routines and everyday violence. The sound is angular and clear: rough guitars, tight, dry rhythms and sparse electronics here and there. Between spare miniatures and more robust passages the focus is on story, timing and cadence.

Dowd regularly tours Europe and North America, alternating small-band lineups with more electric configurations. In Groningen you’ll hear that hybrid approach: songs as short tales, music that leaves as much space as it does rhythm.
