Rooted in the Great American Songbook and a long-standing trio format encouraged early on by bassist Ray Brown, her approach threads swing, hushed ballads and a soft Brazilian pulse. From the Nat King Cole homage All for You through Love Scenes, When I Look in Your Eyes and The Look of Love, the piano leads while a low, unhurried voice sets the tone. Live in Paris captured the road work that followed, and The Girl in the Other Room, co-written with Elvis Costello, opened a path to original writing.
