The Blockheads

Nati a Londra nel 1977 attorno a Ian Dury, i The Blockheads riunirono inizialmente Chaz Jankel, Norman Watt-Roy, Charley Charles, Mick Gallagher, John Turnbull e Davey Payne, diversi dei quali provenivano dai The Loving Awareness Band. Con il nome Ian Dury and the Blockheads svilupparono un suono molto riconoscibile, al crocevia tra new wave, pub rock, funk, punk, reggae e una sensibilità melodica ereditata dal music-hall inglese. Questo stile di scrittura nervoso e ritmato si impose alla fine degli anni Settanta con New Boots and Panties!! (1977), Do It Yourself (1979) e Laughter (1980), e con brani come "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll", "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" e "Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3". Dopo una prima separazione all’inizio degli anni Ottanta, i The Blockheads si riformarono a fasi a partire dal 1987 e in modo più duraturo negli anni Novanta, registrando in particolare Mr. Love Pants (1998). Dopo la morte di Ian Dury nel 2000, il gruppo proseguì con Derek Hussey alla voce e, dal 2022, con Mike Bennett, mantenendo comunque il nucleo formato da Jankel, Gallagher e Turnbull. Tra le pubblicazioni successive figurano Where’s the Party? (2004), Staring Down the Barrel (2009) e Same Horse Different Jockey (2013).
