After two albums and years of on-stage complicity, the Italian-American guitarist Michael Felberbaum reunites with Pierre de Bethmann at the piano and keyboards, Gabriel Midon on double bass, and Karl Jannuska on drums. One immediately recognizes a music that feels familiar within the first seconds. This heralds a contemporary jazz that is at once sensitive and energetic, which catches the ear by surprise, touches the soul, and offers a few subtle grooves.
With Michael Felberbaum, music is never simply played: it lives, it breathes, and at times it carries you toward zones that are a little hypnotic, almost psychedelic, where improvisation has as much room as raw emotion. The jazz press has in the past praised his ability to meld intelligence and emotion in his projects.
This has also been noted in earlier ensembles for the subtle dialogues between instruments, where each musician becomes a soloist and partner at the same time, and where the cohesion of the group makes the music vibrate from the inside. This quartet forges a band sound, open and captivating, that turns a concert into a dense musical journey, from which one leaves wondering how the hours flew by so quickly.
