A purveyor of Colombian music and tradition, this eleven-member orchestra has established itself in the realm of cumbia.
Driven by early-20th-century jazz and faithful to the heritage of composer Lucho Bermúdez, the musicians of this ensemble have managed to blend the traditions of yesteryear to offer a modern, up-to-date sound with flavors of days gone by.
Few European ensembles have earned the renown of Cumbia Ya!.
In recent years, cumbia, a popular expression in Latin America, has found its place in the programming of France’s national stages. The Théâtre de Caen, the Besançon International Festival, and the Opéra de Lyon have placed their trust in this orchestra, which deftly balances the popular aspects with the elegance of its musical writing—music still relatively unknown in an orchestral format. A genre and format that attracts both younger and older audiences, fostering intergenerational exchange.
In twenty years of existence, Cumbia Ya!’s music has been shaped around the compositions of the orchestra’s musicians. In residence at the Studio de l’Ermitage for more than 18 years, it is there that their compositions have taken shape in harmony with the audience. It is there that one can see them perform, again and again, vibrating to the sound and the stories that the generosity and charisma of this orchestra share on stage.
