Info
Rose Lowder's cinema is a cinema of attention: attention to the 'nothing extraordinary,' as she modestly puts it in the title of one of her films, but also attention to detail and to reality seen up close. The fact that her films offer no narration or linear time reinforces this necessary attention, this work of the eye that she suggests without imposing it.
For more than fifty years, Rose Lowder has filmed nature and what is nearby by weaving the images inside her 16-millimeter Bolex camera. A one-minute film consists of 1,440 distinct images, and a shot by Rose Lowder can sometimes last well under a second, producing on the retina superpositions that are far from accidental.
The exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo presents her most recent films and, on film, La Source de la Loire, whose production years (2019–2021) indicate that Rose Lowder traveled there for three consecutive springs to record and transfigure, in the quiet of Mont Gerbier de Jonc, the tremors of a small brook that is the source of the longest river in France.
The film is accompanied by twenty short one‑minute films arranged into 'bouquets,' filmed on properties in the South of France and the North of Italy, where biodiversity is cultivated and preserved.
