There is no need to introduce Abd Al Malik, a major figure in France's hip-hop culture. The rapper-narrator-slam poet is back on stage at the Théâtre Le Carré Sainte-Maxime with, slung over his shoulder, the album Gibraltar which has marked his life as a man and an artist. His way of delivering a message of peace to humanity and of reconciling identities.
Twenty years after its release, the Gibraltar album still acts as an opus-manifesto against exclusion and racism, for its evocation of the life of a young gangsta rapper who decides to cross the sea to Morocco remains timely. Today, freed from the weight of the identity question, between the Congo of his parents and the France where he was born and grew up, Abd Al Malik is at peace. He has therefore chosen to celebrate Gibraltar to hammer home the importance and urgency of reconciliation in the face of globalization.
He draws on musical samples from world heritage to conceive a new work and make his favorite musics rhyme: rap, jazz, and Jacques Brel, to whom he pays homage in his track Les Autres. A visual and stage narrative of verb, body, and instruments where one finds his declamatory talent and his distinctive presence, which make him an unclassifiable artist.
