Abd Al Malik revisits the flagship album Gibraltar, imagining a stage form that blends music, dance, and visual arts to embody this idea of a universal identity born of the local and open to the world. Between Paris, Strasbourg, his Congolese origins, and his faith, Abd Al Malik illustrates a multifaceted and complex identity. Influenced by thinkers such as Camus and Glissant, he defends the idea that identity is not fixed but made up of different affiliations that coexist and dialogue. With Gibraltar, he was already seeking to explore this notion by blending artistic genres (rap, jazz, literature, theatre, slam poetry) and by creating bridges between worlds that are often separate. He presents rap as an art fundamentally hybrid, capable of reconciling cultures through the sampling principle, which assembles elements from around the world. This artistic approach thus becomes a metaphor for humanity itself, made of mixtures and relationships. Twenty years later, he underscores the urgency of this vision in a context of globalization that tends to homogenize and erase differences. To celebrate Gibraltar, therefore, is to call for reconciliation: with oneself, with others, and around a common humanity, a prerequisite for valuing singularities. Celebrating Gibraltar twenty years after its release is thus to suggest today the importance and urgency of reconciliation: a dialogue from the self to itself and from the self to others.
