Info
He is one of today's bluesmen, heir to an authentic tradition. Taj Mahal describes him as the Wonderboy and the Wunderkind.
With each generation, a young bluesman bursts onto the scene and sends a jolt through the blues community. Jontavious Willis could have that effect on people. The multi-instrumentalist has released an album, Spectacular Class. Through original lyrics written by Willis himself, this musician delivers an album that features several styles of blues: Delta, Piedmont, Texas and gospel.
Hailing from Greenville, Georgia, Willis grew up singing gospel music at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church with his grandfather. From a young age, he possessed the talent and the passion for music. At the age of 14, he came across a video of Muddy Waters performing Hoochie Coochie Man and was instantly hooked on the blues.
In 2015, Taj Mahal invited Willis to join him on stage. That appearance led Willis to bigger stages and new opportunities, including opening for select shows on the TajMo tour, alongside his musical mentors Taj Mahal and Keb' Mo'. Many of Willis's fans regard him as an old soul. His instrumental playing style and his voice touch the roots of country blues.
Spectacular Class is the follow-up to his debut album, Blue Metamorphosis, released in 2016. In 2018, the album was recognized by the Blues Foundation through its International Blues Challenge, where he received the Best Self-Produced CD award.
Jontavious Willis will perform at New Morning on December 3, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.
