Zena, consisting of the keyboardist and producer Yohan Kebede and the bassist and producer Menelik Mulugeta Claffey, who is known by the mononym Menelik, breathes new life into Ethiopian music with a London touch. Zena, which means 'Legacy' in Amharic, forges its own legacy and, in doing so, builds on the traditions of Ethiopian musicians. Zena's music has its roots in Ethio-Jazz, which, like the warmth and sanctity of 'Etan', the Ethiopian aromatic incense, flowed through the childhood homes of Yohan and Menelik, and while doing so preserves the vitality and the innovative spirit that characterizes the London scene from which both emerged. It is mystical and unorthodox and also draws from influences of alternative R&B, trip-hop, dub, and psychedelic music. It is soulful and at the same time sensual; for Ethiopian traditionalists, more of a taboo, but inviting for fans of D’Angelo and Marvin Gaye. Zena's concert will take place on 8 November 2026 at Knust in Hamburg and is presented by Jazzhouse and Groove City Recordstore.
