Info
Burning Spear, alias Winston Rodney, brings to Utrecht a story that has run through roots reggae since the late 1960s. Born in Saint Ann’s Bay, in the north of Jamaica, he forged early on a music that sits at the crossroads of Rastafari spirituality, African memory and chronicles of daily life. Initially conceived as a vocal trio, the project recorded at Studio One before taking on a new dimension in the mid-1970s, notably with the series of albums that established him permanently: Marcus Garvey and its dub version Garvey’s Ghost, then Man in the Hills and Social Living.
What remains his signature is unchanged: a voice with an almost incantatory phrasing, tempos often slow, basslines looping, percussion fed by nyabinghi rhythms and brass used with restraint. On stage, the tracks open up, lengthen and take on a collective scope, like a single breath moving forward without rushing. See you on September 3, 2026 at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht to rediscover this roots sound, direct and soulful.
