Born in Waterford in 1946 and raised in England, Gilbert O’Sullivan imposed, from the late 1960s, a piano‑driven pop that was highly crafted, at the crossroads of soft rock, orchestrated chanson and an immediate melodic sensibility. At the turn of the 1970s, he came to prominence with Nothing Rhymed, before following with Alone Again (Naturally), Clair, or Get Down: songs carried by a nervous piano style and a distinctly personal way of telling everyday life, with dry humor, irony and a taste for detail.
On stage, his repertoire naturally draws from the period of his most landmark albums, such as Himself (1971), Back to Front (1972) and I’m a Writer, Not a Fighter (1973), while leaving room for a trajectory that continued across several decades.
