Sofie Royer returns with a new album.

Having released three LPs, the Viennese musician explores refined songwriting and production, with lyrics that balance humor and precision. before/after addresses the concerns of being an artist and weaves self-exploration with cultural commentary. Sofie has moved from lo-fi production to pop, has opened for Lana Del Rey, Air and LCD Soundsystem, and her new album is co-produced with Matt Cohn (SZA, The Weeknd), Jorgen Odegard (Sabrina Carpenter) and Eli Hirsch (Suki Waterhouse), but she still reflects on where she fits in. She critiques the music industry: "I’m too pop for the art world, too indie darling for the mainstream," and often turns the focus on herself.

Across 12 pop songs, Royer asks whether conflicts between past and future are battles with the self. "We are constantly in a battle with the ‘pre’ and ‘post’ states of time," she explains. "There is a preoccupation with these two tenses; yet by remaining entangled in these states, we are often our own greatest obstacle to overcome. In the state of before/after, it’s always you vs you."
