Arrested Development

On 13 September 2026 Arrested Development will perform at Cpunt Poppodium in Hoofddorp. The Atlanta collective, formed in 1988 around rapper/producer Speech and DJ Headliner, established an alternative hip-hop sound in the early 1990s that blends Afrocentric themes with soul and funk. Contrary to the prevailing gangsta rap of the time, the group presented stories with social, spiritual and political perspectives. Their breakthrough album 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of… (1992) produced classics such as "Tennessee", "People Everyday" and "Mr. Wendal", and in 1993 they won a Grammy for Best New Artist as well as an award for "Tennessee".

After Zingalamaduni (1994) and a hiatus, Arrested Development resumed activity from 2000 onward with an independent string of albums: Among the Trees, Since the Last Time, Strong, Standing at the Crossroads, This Was Never Home, Changing the Narrative, Craft & Optics, Don't Fight Your Demons and For the FKN Love (2021). In concert the emphasis is on groove, harmonies and a band feel that broadly highlights their catalogue, from early hits to recent work. The current lineup consists of Speech, One Love, JJ Boogie and Fareedah Aleem, who together deliver the group's characteristic mix of rhythm, melody and narrative rap on stage.
