From the South Bay of Los Angeles, Modern Color emerged out of a DIY scene with a sound at the crossroads of post-hardcore, shoegaze, emo and grunge. Thick, saturated guitars and restrained tempos set the frame for a vocal delivery that stays plain and direct. Early on, the band stood out with short, tense tracks before opening up to more atmospheric writing where melody takes more room without dropping the abrasive backbone. Release after release, they’ve found a balance between saturation, sense of texture and introspective composition, moving across punk and hardcore circuits as comfortably as on bills closer to indie rock. It’s a distinctly Californian approach, mixing emotional urgency with a muted heaviness, and favoring density over demonstration.
