Jools Holland and His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra arrive at Symphony Hall, Birmingham on 20 November 2026. A pianist, composer and founding member of Squeeze, Holland has built a stage around rhythm and blues and boogie-woogie, leading from the keyboard a big-band‑sized ensemble. His playing, rooted in the blues, alternates between rapid phrasing and syncopation, while the brass and rhythm sections carry arrangements tailored for swing and old‑school rock ’n’ roll. On the programme are original compositions and reworked standards arranged for a large orchestra: echoing riffs, tightly timed ensemble breaks and piano choruses that swell without losing the groove. Born of years on stage, this setup favours interaction, collective buildups and the energy of a full orchestra, with that left‑hand slap on the piano that is Holland’s trademark. An evening devoted to the roots of R’n’B played in the present, driven by the sound of the brass and a piano that leads the dance.
