Drawing on their post-hardcore experience with Fugazi, Joe Lally and Brendan Canty — the Washington quartet’s rhythm section — joined guitarist Anthony Pirog and saxophonist James Brandon Lewis to form a project that moves between post-bop, fusion, acid jazz and avant-garde rock. The music is spare and unadorned, threaded with a constant tension, capable of sweeping its audience into a high-voltage melodic vortex.
