Release party for the new album Caldeira on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the New Morning. Mario Canonge, a pianist from Martinique, appears to have found his spiritual and artistic core with this trio, whose sound is marked by earthy, elemental overtones. Like three elements of Ayurveda, Mario Canonge, Michel Alibo and Arnaud Dolmen are revealed, poetically, as fire, earth and air, respectively. Around the quest for an imagined absolute, these three shamans come together to celebrate the very essence of the earth—its primeval magma—like a burning blood that gives life. This album, titled Caldeira, which refers to the circular depression at the heart of a volcanic edifice, echoes the music of this trio, born from an eruption of ideas as creative as they are innovative. Joining the notes of this triptych are those of saxophonist Godwin Louis, an American jazz musician of Haitian origin. Subtle and wild, Mario Canonge's new compositions invite emotional introspection and pay tribute to the peoples who live at the foot of volcanoes, often sun-soaked communities.
