Amapiano is the term used to describe South Africa's growing electronic music movement. Emerging in 2016, Amapiano is a medley of deep house, jazz, kwaito and lounge music. The name is derived from the Zulu plural article "ama" and the English noun "piano." AmapianoNL takes place on 11 April 2026 at Melkweg at 21h59.
Initially, Amapiano was thought to be merely an underground sound, but it was soon proven otherwise. By 2022, Amapiano had expanded beyond South Africa, reaching charts in countries around the world.
