Info
On 28 May 2026 at Le Moloco in Audincourt, two major figures of Jamaican reggae share the bill: The Abyssinians and Big Youth, in a face‑off between roots harmonies and the art of toasting.
Formed in Kingston in the late 1960s, The Abyssinians established themselves as a vocal trio fronted by Bernard Collins and brothers Donald and Lynford Manning. Drawing on soul roots and gospel hues, their signature lies in tight harmonies, a measured tempo and deep basslines, nourished by a Rasta imagination in which biblical references and Amharic words resonate. Tracks such as Satta Massagana and the albums Forward On To Zion and Arise have shaped a repertoire of ensemble songs that endures across eras. Live, the group delivers meditative, sung roots music conceived as much for the stage as for the communion of the audience.
Opposite them, Big Youth—a pioneer of Jamaican deejaying—has perfected the art of spoken‑sung phrasing over roots riddims. Discovered on Kingston’s sound systems in the wake of U‑Roy, he left his mark on the 1970s with S.90 Skank, Chi Chi Run and the album Screaming Target, followed by Dreadlocks Dread and Natty Cultural Dread. Everyday lyrics, social consciousness, Rasta spirituality and an aptitude for improvised commentary define a direct, nimble style that links the golden age of the sound systems to the present scene.
