Info
On Friday, March 20 at Wavelength @ St. Anne’s in Toronto, Ribbon Skirt sets the tone. The Montréal duo of Anishinaabe singer-guitarist Tashiina Buswa and multi-instrumentalist Billy Riley bends post-punk into taut, melodic shapes, all angular guitars, steady drive and lyrics anchored in lived experience. Their debut album, Bite Down, shortlisted for the 2025 Polaris Music Prize, sharpened a sound built on lean hooks and clipped dynamics.
Status/Non-Status, led by Anishinaabe songwriter Adam Sturgeon, looks inward while pushing outward, mixing folk rock with post-rock dynamics. A close-knit group of collaborators builds space and tension around Sturgeon’s voice, letting the songs swell and recede with feedback, drones and clear-eyed storytelling.
Mad Iris brings a raw, mid-90s garage feel from Toronto’s scene, sitting somewhere between noise rock and shoegaze. Fuzzed guitars, blown-out drums and a DIY edge drive songs that come off immediate and unvarnished. Their debut album is due soon on Ba Da Bing Records, with a live set that carries the same rough-cut energy.
