On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Makeda in Marseille, Before Babel brings together three projects that look squarely at the music of today and yesterday.
Maya Kamaty returns with Sovaz, a raw project mixing syncopated rhythms, urban textures and dry pulses. Her voice, both supple and taut, moves from calm to restrained anger, serving lyrics about instinct, identity and self-assertion. Between urban pop and street energy, the duo formed with Sskyron establishes an unadorned, physical sound that advances tightly to the groove.
Orchestre de la Crèche makes Congolese rumba vibrate with guitars tracing dancing lines, vocals in Lingala and supple percussion. The tempo breathes and stretches, inviting natural movement. A lively, precise rumba that takes its time to create an atmosphere and recalls what gives this repertoire its strength.
Adil Smaali & Elements of Baraka open a trance space between Gnawa rituals and psy-trance. Haunted vocals, a saturated guembri, tribal percussion and hypnotic basses compose a dense soundscape threaded with psychedelic washes, North African chants and bursts of trumpet. The set progresses in waves, between letting go and rhythmic tension, like a ritual conceived for the body.
