L.A. Salami

L.A. Salami, also known as Lookman Adekunle Salami, brings his search for identity and language directly to the stage. Raised in Peckham with Nigerian roots, he early on found an outlet in art, film, poetry and finally music. A formative realization for him was that honesty in the lyrics counts for more than sheer vocal acrobatics — an impulse that has shaped him from Bob Dylan to contemporary rap references. Today he links folk and indie guitar with a delivery that shifts between singing, spoken word and phrasing close to rap.

Live, voice, guitar and storytelling take center stage. His songs orbit urban observations, social friction and intimate self-questioning, sometimes as a stripped-down ballad, sometimes with a driving spoken cadence. Influences range from classic songwriting to modern rap narrative craft; what matters most is the lyric, the rhythm of the words and how the two interact. Anyone who sees L.A.
