Info
On May 8, 2026, at Espace St-Denis (Théâtre St‑Denis) in Montreal, Brad Mehldau and Kirill Gerstein join forces for a two‑piano evening that stages a dialogue between improvisation and the classical repertoire. Grounded in close listening and responsive interplay, the program moves fluidly between reimagined songs, jazz standards and notated pieces, allowing counterpoint, rhythm and color to circulate freely.
Long formed by his work in trios and his solo projects, Brad Mehldau brings a penchant for rhythmic displacement, clear melodic lines and the transformation of popular material. From his early trio recordings to recent conversations with Bach and the Beatles, he has honed a musical language in which the hands weave layered lines and leave room for subtlety. In a duo setting, his sense of form and swing finds an equally attentive partner.
Kirill Gerstein’s background combines early jazz study with a rigorous classical education across Russia, the United States and Europe. His playing fuses concert‑hall precision with an instinct for improvisation. Comfortable with contemporary composers and late‑Romantic sonorities, he approaches repertoire as malleable material to be shaped in the moment. Alongside Mehldau he contributes a strong sense of timing, tonal weight and a distinctive color palette, transforming the exchange into chamber music for two pianos.
