Info
The Harlem Gospel Choir will resonate through the Ancient Theatre of Orange on 27 June 2026, as part of the Chorégies d’Orange. Founded in Harlem in 1986, the choir occupies a key place in New York gospel. It brings together singers from the city’s Baptist and Pentecostal churches, bearers of a heritage where spirituality, African-American history and the struggle for civil rights intersect. Their repertoire draws on traditional gospel and spirituals, opens to soul and pays tribute to figures who have shaped the genre, from Mahalia Jackson to Aretha Franklin, including Martin Luther King Jr. On stage, tight harmonies, call-and-response and clapping carry the audience through timeless songs and more recent numbers. The performance presents gospel at its source, between the passing on of tradition and collective energy. The Ancient Theatre of Orange offers acoustics well suited to large vocal ensembles.
