Sebastian Marx

Sebastian Marx returns with a new work-in-progress show. A New Yorker based in Paris, he has spent years dissecting everyday French life with the instincts of a stand-up trained in American clubs: direct observation, sharp timing, language mix-ups and cultural code clashes. Here nothing is set in stone: ideas are honed, jokes are tested, the form evolves in close response to what happens in the room.

Marx draws on his dual cultural background to upend the small scenes of urban life: paperwork, conversations that go off the rails, false friends that turn the meaning of a sentence, misunderstandings between local habits and Anglo-Saxon reflexes. Sometimes in French, sometimes in English, always clear, he paints the portrait of an expatriate navigating between two worlds without an instruction manual. The audience is part of the process: what works stays, what stumbles gets reworked for the next performance.
