Truly
Formed in the early 1990s within the Seattle scene, Truly brought together Robert Roth, Hiro Yamamoto and Mark Pickerel, all three already active in American indie rock. Emerging from the grunge context but quickly drawn to more expansive forms, the band developed an alternative rock with a strong psychedelic dimension, where saturated guitars sit alongside atmospheric moods, elongated song structures and a melodic, often introspective vocal. After an initial EP, Heart and Lungs, released in 1991, Truly issued the album Fast Stories… from Kid Coma in 1995, characterized by a mix of weight inherited from hard rock and more experimental textures, followed by Feeling You Up in 1997, which confirmed a direction toward rock that is both dense and melodic. Active mainly in the mid‑1990s on indie‑rock club and festival stages, Truly later experienced periods of hiatus and revival, with various returns to the stage and new recordings released more sporadically. The band remains associated with Seattle’s post‑grunge orbit while occupying a distinct place thanks to the prominence of psychedelic atmospheres and extended songwriting carried by Robert Roth’s voice and guitars, a central element of Truly’s sonic identity.
