On June 4, 2027, Toots and the Maytals bring their Jamaican songbook to 229 London, with Leba Hibbert at the mic. Born out of Kingston’s early 60s scene, the group helped bridge ska, rocksteady and reggae with a sound steeped in gospel and soul, built on tight harmonies and a raw, elastic vocal approach.
This show leans into the tracks that shaped the genre’s global story: “Do the Reggay”, the 1968 single that pushed the word reggae into wider circulation, alongside staples like “54-46 That’s My Number”, “Pressure Drop”, “Monkey Man” and “Funky Kingston”. Since Toots Hibbert’s passing, Leba steps in as the band’s new front person, carrying both the family link and her own experience as a singer and collaborator. Expect a set that keeps the groove front and center, driven by choruses made for singing back and rhythms that still hit with the directness of their original recordings.
