• Andy Narell — steel pans
• Jany McPherson — piano/vocals
• Adriano DD Tenorio — percussion
Andy Narell, a pioneer of the steel pan, surrounds himself with two accomplices: the Cuban pianist and vocalist Jany McPherson, and percussionist Adriano DD Tenorio, at Le Baiser Salé.
There is a story behind Andy Narell's choice of instrument. His father brought the steel pan to New York with the aim of encouraging street children to join steel bands. Having become an ambassador for this relatively uncommon instrument, he was one of the first to integrate it into jazz, which gives him a distinctive place in the spectrum of fusion. From calypso to world music, through orchestras, not to mention collaborations with Hugh Masekela, Michael Brecker or Mike Stern, Andy Narell continues to explore.
This trio did not arise by chance. Gifted with a velvety low register voice and precise phrasing, discovered by the producer who has worked with Nina Simone, Henri Salvador and Richard Galliano, Jany McPherson shares with Andy Narell a long musical rapport, notably through the recording of a duo album.
On stage, the dialogue between Narell's steel pans, McPherson's piano and vocals carried by Tenorio's percussion offers a journey through the Caribbean into jazz via Cuba—a meeting of cultures and rare timbres, both intimate and energetic.
