Info
On 16 February 2027, Scientist brings his dub craft to Whelan’s in Dublin. Behind the name is Hopeton Overton Brown, a key figure from Kingston’s studio and sound-system circuit who moved from technical work to the mixing desk in the late 1970s, learning in the orbit of King Tubby’s methods. His signature is a stripped-back, precise dub reggae built on heavy bass and drums, sharp rhythmic cuts, and those sudden vocal flashes that appear and vanish inside wide, carefully sculpted space.
This show is a chance to hear that hands-on, real-time approach to mixing that made dub more than an effect and turned it into performance. The sets draw on the era when Scientist worked with producer Henry “Junjo” Lawes and the Roots Radics, as roots reggae hardened into forms edging toward early dancehall, a period tied to classic releases like Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires and Scientist Encounters Pac-Man. Expect versions, pressure, and a mixer treated like an instrument.
