On 15 October 2027, The 1865 in Southampton hosts a double bill that’s built for anyone who likes their rhythm ’n’ blues tight, direct, and played like it’s meant for a crowded room. Nine Below Zero and Dr. Feelgood come from the same UK pub-rock grit, where sharp grooves and no-nonsense delivery matter more than studio polish.
Nine Below Zero made their name on the late-70s London circuit, driven by Dennis Greaves’ guitar and vocals and a sound that pulls from Chicago blues, rock’n’roll and soul, often with that cutting harmonica up front. Their early run still sets the tone: Live at the Marquee (1980), then Don’t Point Your Finger and Third Degree, plus the hard touring that kept the songs lean and fast.
Dr. Feelgood bring the Canvey Island R&B snap that helped define pub rock: short, groove-led tunes, classic covers, and that dry, nervous edge from the band’s early years. The current line-up is led by drummer Kevin Morris, with Gordon Russell on lead guitar, Phil Mitchell on bass, and vocalist Robert Kane steering the set through staples like “Milk & Alcohol” and “Down at the Doctors.”
