On 22 September 2026 at Royal Festival Hall in London, the Philharmonia Orchestra takes on Julia Wolfe’s Fire in My Mouth, a semi-staged work that sits somewhere between concert, memorial and political statement. Conducted by Marin Alsop, this performance puts the orchestra at the centre of a score built to carry both narrative and raw sensation: the rush of industrial machinery, folk material, and a dense, cinematic sweep of sound.

Wolfe’s piece looks back to the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York, and the lives lost there, many of them young immigrant women. Here, music becomes a way of holding those stories up to the present: labour struggles, women’s rights, the cost of work, and the way a city can swallow people whole.

The semi-staging matters. Video and lighting shape the space, while a 146-voice all-woman choir mirrors the number of garment workers who died, turning the stage into a living count. With the Philharmonia driving the momentum underneath, the result is built for impact: not an opera, not an oratorio, but something that hits like a collective act of remembrance.
