Two artist personalities, two musical worlds, one shared sonic space: in “You and I” the distinctive, warmly grounded voice of Max Mutzke meets the poetic, virtuosic musical language of the Cuban pianist Marialy Pacheco. What emerges is more than a classical duo evening program; it is an intense dialogue between pop, soul, Latin jazz, classical music and lived life experience. At the center are songs by Max Mutzke, which Pacheco has newly arranged in close collaboration with him. The essence of the songs remains—their stories, their honesty, their emotional depth. At the same time Pacheco opens up new spaces with fresh harmonies, offbeat rhythms, surprising turns and great sonic freedom.
Content-wise the program has also become more personal, with new, primarily German songs. They tell of closeness, love, farewell, forgiveness, and what connects people. Max Mutzke and Marialy Pacheco show themselves to be open, approachable and personal. What makes this evening is not only the musical excellence of both artists, but also their matured connection. Over years a duo has developed that meets one another with ease: trusting, spontaneous and with palpable joy in making music together. Thus every concert becomes a living, moving dialogue between two artists and with the audience, which repeatedly becomes an interactive part of the music and its stories.
“You and I” does not seek to overwhelm, but to move. Without grand staging, without distraction, without excess. Just two people on stage, making music and telling stories with open hearts. In a time full of constant background noise, crises and bad news, Marialy Pacheco and Max Mutzke create a space in which the audience can step out of it all for a few hours, a break from everyday life, a moment to pause, a musical breath.
