Info
Under the Romare name, London producer and DJ Archie Fairhurst builds new shapes from existing sounds, treating sampling like a form of collage: cutting, layering, and re-contextualising fragments until they click into something fresh. The alias is a nod to Romare Bearden, the American artist known for his sharp, detailed collages, and that influence runs through Fairhurst’s method, where research and curiosity matter as much as play.
Over the years his focus has shifted without ever settling on a single lane. From the early impact of Meditations On Afrocentrism (2012) and the Love Songs releases, through to Ninja Tune albums like Projections (a direct tribute to Bearden) and Home (2020), his music moves between jazz, soul, blues, house, broken beat and downtempo, with sampling increasingly woven into more subtle instrumentation. On 29 October 2026 at Belgrave Music Hall in Leeds, Romare brings that approach to the stage, somewhere between DJ set and live performance, built for bodies but packed with detail.
