With Secret Love, the group pushes further into what defines their signature: tracks that stretch out, textures that grab, and a sense of contrast between aridity and melody. It summons as much the punk and hardcore urgency of the early 80s as it does more noise detours—a playful no wave or more expansive, almost pastoral passages. Shaw’s diction, precise and metronomic, sits in a lineage of spoken word that runs from Laurie Anderson to Sue Tompkins, while remaining firmly anchored in the electricity of rock.
