Info

On 21 June 2026 at the Barbican Centre, London, three distinct voices from Africa and its diaspora take the spotlight: Patoranking, Ghorwane and Kizaba.

Patoranking steps in from Lagos with a sound that threads afrobeats, reggae and dancehall. Known for early cuts like Alubarika and Girlie O, he’s since pushed his mix across albums from God Over Everything to World Best, shaping melodic hooks and a dancehall-inflected flow that fits as well on afropop beats as on reggae grooves. Collabs with artists across West and East Africa, as well as the Caribbean, have sharpened a style built for big choruses and quick rhythmic turns.

Ghorwane carry the pulse of marrabenta, Mozambique’s dance music, where traditional rhythms meet echoes of Portuguese folk. Formed in Maputo in the early 80s, the band leans on interlocking guitars, saxophones and percussion, with lyrics that shift between shangaan, ronga and chope. Their songs trace everyday stories and urban energy, keeping the groove nimble and warm.

Kizaba bridges Kinshasa and Montréal with Afro-Electro-Pop rooted in Congolese rumba-rock. A singer and multi-instrumentalist, he folds Central African percussion, electronic textures and multilingual vocals into kinetic sets, nodding to La Sape and the lineage of Papa Wemba while aiming squarely at today’s dancefloor.
