On 23 October 2026 at Bristol Beacon, Manding Melody brings together Malian guitarist-singer Habib Koité and Gambian kora player Sura Susso for a live conversation around Manding repertoire with a modern edge. Led by Susso, the project assembles musicians from Senegal, Mali and The Gambia. The kora sits at the centre, weaving with balafon, percussion and bass, while voices carry stories from the griot tradition. Raised in a family of hereditary musicians, Susso treats the repertoire as both memory and movement, opening space for new arrangements without breaking the acoustic backbone of the music.
Alongside him, Koité brings fluid guitar patterns and understated vocals, rooted in Kassonké song forms and shaped by years on stage with his ensemble Bamada. His phrasing often mirrors the kora, setting up call-and-response passages that lean toward folk colours with discreet blues accents. If the intimate duets of Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté offer a reference point, this concert widens the frame: singers, balafon and a grounded rhythm section extend the dialogue, giving Manding melodies room to breathe in a collective, cross‑generational setting.
