Info
Dead Calm, the slowcore alias of Irish musician Liam McCay, comes to Hare & Hounds in Birmingham on 15 September 2026. Raised in Donegal and known for parallel monikers like Sign Crushes Motorist and Take Care, McCay writes compact, direct songs that sit between indie rock, lo-fi and slowcore. Under Dead Calm, he leans into slow tempos, hushed guitars and plainspoken lyrics that trace everyday feelings without ornament.
The project has taken shape across releases such as Accept (2023) and Keep Moving (2025), whose understated sketches and longer drifts feed a live set built for quiet tension rather than volume. Starting out on fiddle before switching to guitar during the pandemic, McCay has honed a deliberately unadorned sound that stays close to the grain of the home recording. On stage, he keeps arrangements spare—guitar lines slightly frayed, rhythms unhurried, vocals almost confessional—letting space do the work.
The show highlights the way he shares material across aliases while holding a consistent tone: short forms, minimal phrasing, and melodies that hang in the air. Special guests join the bill.
