Rough Trade Recommends presents: Ġenn + Eli + Juju

Ġenn

Formed on the island of Malta, the Brighton-based/Anglo-Maltese outfit Ġenn is: Janelle Borg – guitars (she/her), Sofia Rosa Cooper – drums (she/they), Leona Farrugia – vocals (she/they), and Leanne Zammit – bass (she/her).

Ġenn is a sisterhood founded on trust, with their move to the UK mirrored by their 2023 debut album unum (Latin for oneness and unity). The album received support from BBC Radio 6 Music and KEXP, with a tracklist that spans experimental rock, post-punk and Mediterranean folk.

The collaborative video for the single The Sister Of received a UK Music Video Award nomination for its cinematography.

The band has appeared at festivals such as Eurosonic (NL) and The Great Escape (UK), alongside tours with Metz, Deadletter and Pussy Riot.

Eli

Eli is an alternative artist whose music blends pop, R&B and electronic influences. His music recalls Medium Build and Caroline Polachek.

He takes cues from his parents’ record collection, spanning Prince, Whitney Houston and Radiohead.

Early singles Dummy, 15 + Alive and Imagination introduced his style, while Rough and Slow earned BBC Radio 1 support from Jess Iszatt.

Juju

Juju merges guitars, heavy synths and influences from fantasy and fiction. Originally from the south coast of Dorset, she is now based in Bristol.

Recent shows include opening for St. Vincent in her hometown of Bournemouth at the O2 Academy, PVRIS at KOKO London, and Yonaka at the Lower Third in London.

Juju is finishing production on her 7-track EP, Stuck in Fantasy.
