Toots and the Maytals bring the Reggae Got Soul 50th Anniversary Tour (1976–2026) to Dreamland Margate on 10 May 2026. Formed in Jamaica in the 1960s and renamed Toots and the Maytals for the 1969 debut Sweet and Dandy, the group helped define the shift from ska and rocksteady to reggae, even popularising the word itself with the 1968 single Do the Reggay. Led for decades by Frederick “Toots” Hibbert — cited by Rolling Stone among the 100 greatest singers — the band forged a catalogue that travelled well beyond Jamaica.
Now fronted by Toots’ daughter Leba Hibbert, the Maytals carry that gospel-tinged, soul-steeped energy into the present. A singer and songwriter with releases of her own and collaborations with Sly & Robbie, Jimmy Cliff and others, Leba takes the mic to celebrate a cornerstone album while honoring the group’s enduring songbook: 54-46 Was My Number, Monkey Man, Pressure Drop, Funky Kingston, Broadway Jungle, Bam Bam, Time Tough and, of course, Reggae Got Soul. Special guests join for a night tracing six decades of Jamaican sound.
