Info
Toots and the Maytals play New Century, Manchester on 27 May 2026. Formed in early‑60s Kingston by Frederick “Toots” Hibbert with Henry “Raleigh” Gordon and Nathaniel “Jerry” Matthias, the group fused ska, rocksteady and reggae with gospel and soul in tight vocal harmonies. Early sessions at Studio One and with producer Leslie Kong led to songs that travelled far beyond Jamaica: 54‑46 That’s My Number, Pressure Drop, Sweet and Dandy, and Do the Reggay, which helped popularise the very word reggae. In the 1970s the project expanded into a full live band and reached international audiences through tours, Island releases and the soundtrack of The Harder They Come. Today, the group’s touring line‑up keeps that catalogue alive on stage, drawing on the grooves and call‑and‑response energy that defined their sound.
Leba Hibbert appears on the bill. A singer and songwriter and daughter of Toots Hibbert, she carries the family thread with a voice shaped by gospel and roots influences, close to the Maytals’ orbit since childhood. Her set links the foundation to a new chapter, echoing the harmonies and uplift that run through this history of Jamaican music.
