The Flaming Lips & The Beta Band

On 23 July 2026 at The Piece Hall in Halifax, The Flaming Lips share the bill with The Beta Band. Formed in Oklahoma City in 1983 around Wayne Coyne, The Flaming Lips shifted from garage noise and lo‑fi pop to a melodic psychedelia that blends electronics, orchestral colours and offbeat storytelling. Albums like The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots sit alongside later turns on Embryonic, The Terror and American Head. On stage, they favour immersive set‑ups and playful ideas, from headphones concerts to bubble performances developed during the Covid period.

The Beta Band, from Scotland, bring a loose, sample‑friendly mix of psychedelic folk, hip‑hop pulses and indie pop. Emerging in the late 1990s, they stitched grooves, drones and harmonies into songs collected on The Three EPs and carried into albums like The Beta Band and Hot Shots II. Their laid‑back swing and left‑field hooks pair naturally with the Lips’ exploratory pop, promising an evening where odd textures, steady rhythms and warm melodies meet in the open air of The Piece Hall.
