Sebastian Marx returns to the stage with a new work-in-progress show, picking up where you’d expect: observations of everyday life, cultural misunderstandings and the slight mismatch between French codes and American reflexes. After twenty years of “analyzing” France, he’s come up with a theory that seems simple: there are only six types of French people. The question is where you fit, where he places himself, and whether putting people into boxes isn’t, after all, just another box.
Between France and the United States, Paris and “the rest,” religion and atheism, fatherhood and childhood, Sebastian Marx explores this ongoing tug-of-war and the difficulty of finding one’s place, with a direct, precise stand-up that’s familiar enough for audiences to recognize themselves in it.
