Sebastian Marx returns to the stage with a new work-in-progress show, and he picks up exactly where you’d expect: observing everyday life, unpacking cultural misunderstandings, and exploring the subtle mismatch between French codes and American reflexes. After twenty years spent “analyzing” France, he’s arrived at a theory that seems simple: there are only six types of French people. The question remains: where do you fit, where does he fit, and isn’t sorting people into boxes, ultimately, just another box?
Between France and the United States, Paris and “the rest,” religion and atheism, fatherhood and childhood, Sebastian Marx relates this constant tug-of-war and the difficulty of finding one’s place, with a direct, precise stand-up that’s familiar enough for us to recognize ourselves in it.
