Info
On 1 December 2026 The Chameleons play the Melkweg in Amsterdam. The band formed in the early 1980s in Middleton, near Manchester, and established itself within the British post‑punk scene. Around singer‑bassist Mark Burgess, echoing guitar themes, prominent basslines and taut, melodic vocals define the sound: dark in tone, with plenty of space and melody.
On stage the group draws on key albums such as Script of the Bridge (1983), What Does Anything Mean? Basically (1985) and Strange Times (1986), supplemented by material from their restart from 2000 onwards. That period produced Strip, a stripped‑down reworking of older songs, Why Call It Anything (2001) and This Never Ending Now (2002). It gave the repertoire new shapes without changing its essence.
Today Burgess fronts The Chameleons with rotating lineups, faithful to that blend of post‑punk, atmospheric rock and introverted guitar pop. Live you hear tight rhythms, delay‑drenched guitars and compact songs that are given breathing room. The set places early work alongside later chapters, demonstrating how that characteristic guitar sound has continued to run through their music.
