Info
Sun Kil Moon, the ongoing project of Mark Kozelek, brings its narrative-driven folk to Calgary. Born in San Francisco after Red House Painters, the project has moved from slowcore roots toward a barer, acoustic and spoken-sung style. Albums such as Ghosts of the Great Highway and Tiny Cities (his rework of Modest Mouse songs) led to the fingerpicked focus of Admiral Fell Promises, then to the travel notes of Among the Leaves and the intimate, memory-led storytelling of Benji, Universal Themes and Common as Light and Love Are Red Valleys of Blood. Along the way, collaborations have appeared, notably with Jesu, widening the project’s edges without losing its core: detailed scenes, everyday language, and a feel for time stretching inside a song.
On stage, Kozelek often plays solo or with a small band, letting pieces unfold like conversations—hushed melodies, long-form narratives, small observations that stick. Sun Kil Moon plays on September 3, 2026 at Commonwealth in Calgary.
