Black Sea Dahu

On 27 October 2026 at Marché Gare in Lyon, Black Sea Dahu delivered its sober, precise brand of folk. Born in Zurich around singer-songwriter Janine Cathrein, the project brings together a core of close-knit musicians in a flexible formation, somewhere between band and collective. At its heart are direct songwriting and vocal harmonies that slip into slow tempos, a low voice that anchors the songs, guitars and strings that outline the scenery without weighing it down, and a few percussion touches for texture.

After an initial life under the name Josh, Black Sea Dahu asserted itself with the album White Creatures in 2018, then sharpened its frame with the EP No Fire In The Sand. In 2022, I Am My Mother broadened the palette toward more electric textures and more expansive structures, without leaving behind the intimate songwriting that serves as the guiding thread. On stage, the group plays in variable configurations—from stripped-down sets to fuller lineups—and revisits its tracks with dynamics that allow the voices and arrangements to breathe. In Lyon, that calm tension and acoustic grain were present, making the songs linger long after the last note, between modern folk and bursts of Americana.
